Go beyond the usual must-dos—explore off-the-beaten-path and uncover unique experiences to match every interest

Why settle for ticking off the apparent must-dos when New Zealand has so much more to offer? This isn't just any adventure; it's an opportunity to uncover the unique and hidden gems that make this land genuinely spectacular.

New Zealand is a beauty, no doubt. Who wouldn't want to visit this mesmerising Land of the Long White Cloud, with its jaw-dropping landscapes, cinematic vistas, delectable wines, and endless opportunities for thrill and tranquillity? Whether you're a foodie, a fantasy fan, a hiker, a biker, a birder, or even someone who prefers a more leisurely pace, this island nation is likely perched at the top of your travel wishlist.

But let's be honest—it's probably a long way from home—a journey that demands your time and money. Let's not forget a carbon footprint the size of an All-Black rugby player. So, if you're going to make the trip, you'd best make it count.

No one wants to return from a so-called 'once-in-a-lifetime' trip only to be asked, "Did you do such-and-such?" and realize you've missed something extraordinary.

First, give yourself time. "You're travelling a long way, so ideally, you need at least three to four weeks," advises John Lightwood, director of Silver Fern Holidays. For first-timers, spend about a third of your time on the North Island and two-thirds on the South Island—the South boasts ten national parks compared to the North's three. And don't forget to spend two to three nights in each spot to explore and truly avoid the dreaded pack-unpack-repeat. Remember, personalization is critical to making your trip count.

New Zealand may not be vast – roughly the size of Britain – but squeezing too much into one trip will leave you feeling rushed and unsatisfied. Take your time to truly absorb the beauty and culture of this unique destination.

Next, figure out what you're genuinely into. Sure, you've got big-ticket items like Milford Sound and Rotorua's mud baths, but countless other experiences might make your trip legendary. How about paddling a traditional Māori waka (canoe) or running down the side of an actual volcano?

"New Zealand is a 'wow' destination, brimming with 'wow' experiences," says Emma Maidment from Audley. "But we encourage travellers to seek out those hidden, more intimate experiences, like lesser-known walking tracks, one-on-one tours with private guides, or exploring regions that don't see as much foot traffic." You won't be able to do everything. Still, with a bit of creativity, you can craft a trip you'll be bragging about for years—or at least until your next "once-in-a-lifetime" visit to NZ.

North Island's Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often hailed as one of the world's finest day hikes.

For Walkers and Cyclists

Hiking is a non-negotiable. You could opt for one of New Zealand's ten official Great Walks, like the Milford or Routeburn Tracks – but book in advance. Or, be one of the first to tackle the Hump Ridge Track, opening in 2024.

Alternatively, why not try a mix of shorter hikes? The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often lauded as the world's best day walk, and for good reason. Other options include the Kaikoura Coast Track, Roy's Peak Track with dazzling views over Lake Wanaka, or parts of longer trails like the Queen Charlotte Track. If cycling's your thing, you'll be spoiled for choice, too. New Zealand's 23 off-road Great Rides offer everything from the easy-going Whakarewarewa Forest route to the wild and woolly Old Ghost Road on the South Island.

For Luxury Lovers

For those who taste the finer things, how about staying in one of PurePod's minimalist glass cabins tucked away in the most remote spots? Or combine iconic lodges across the country for the ultimate bragging rights. For a truly unique experience, consider a heli-glamping trip or stay at Te Karaka Lodge to see New Zealand differently.

For Culture Vultures

Meeting the Māori people is critical to understanding New Zealand, and there are plenty of ways to gain insight. Dive deep into Māori heritage on the East Cape, or indulge in a traditional Māori wellness journey at Wai Ariki Spa in Rotorua.

For Foodies

New Zealand's cuisine is as diverse as its landscapes. Whether dining in the country's best winery restaurant, helicoptering to a whisky hut in the mountains or taking a guided food tour around Auckland, you'll find no shortage of culinary delights to savour.

For Nature Buffs

From bird-watching on Mou Waho Island to stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand offers some of the most unique and awe-inspiring nature experiences on the planet.

For Adventure Junkies

For thrill-seekers, this is the land where bungy jumping was born. You can raft down the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall; the adventure never stops. Remember to always follow safety guidelines and use reputable operators for these activities.

To Cruise or Not to Cruise?

With a coastline as long as New Zealand's, a cruise might be the perfect way to see the country. But if you prefer solid ground beneath your feet, combine a cruise with a land-based itinerary for the best of both worlds.

Essentials

Getting there is half the journey – and several airlines are ready to whisk you away. When to go? Peak summer is December to February, but shoulder seasons offer cooler weather, fewer crowds, and often better deals. It's also useful to know that New Zealand's currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD), and credit cards are widely accepted.
