Can you switch off your eSIM? Absolutely! It's as simple as a few taps on your device. In our guide, we'll walk you through the process step by step, from finding the right settings on your device to confirming the deactivation. Dive into our guide on installing, activating, and turning off your eSIM.

What Is an eSIM?
If you're new to eSIMs or need a quick refresher, we're here to help. An eSIM is an embedded SIM card—consider it the traditional SIM card's sophisticated sibling, built right into your device. This technology offers several advantages, such as eliminating the need for physical SIM cards and allowing you to switch between carriers and data plans easily.
No more fiddling with tiny bits of plastic to change carriers or activate a data plan. Instead, you download an eSIM plan directly to your device and instantly connect to a mobile network. How marvellous is that?
With an eDataSIM eSIM, you can:
  • Connect at Local Rates: Enjoy local data rates without the hefty roaming charges.
  • Stay Connected While Travelling: Use eSIM data to keep in touch wherever you go.
  • Keep Your Primary Number: Call and text using your main line.
  • Manage Data Effortlessly: Activate, download, and easily monitor your data.
  • Know What You Pay For: Be clear on how much data you're getting and its validity.
  • Switch Plans Easily: Seamlessly move between local, regional, and global eSIM plans.
  • Top Up On the Go: Add more data whenever you need it.
Before downloading an eSIM, check that your smartphone supports eSIM technology by referring to our list of eSIM-compatible devices.

How eSIMs Work
There are a few important things to note about how an eSIM functions. Designed with travellers in mind, eSIMs come with various networks, data plans, and validity periods.
Suppose you purchase a Japan eSIM with 5GB of data that is valid for thirty days. Your eSIM will operate when it's within range of a Japanese mobile provider's network. Once the thirty days are up or you've used all your data, you must top up your plan or purchase a new one.
Before you set off, check your eSIM's activation policy (found in your plan details). If it activates when you connect to a supported network, you can switch it on upon landing in Japan. If it activates immediately after installation, wait until just before departure to install it.
Once you've installed your eSIM, turn on data roaming for your eSIM line (usually your secondary line). This enables your phone to connect to the network in Japan. Unlike roaming with your primary (domestic) line, you won't be charged extra.
Your eSIM may take a few minutes to connect to the new network. If you encounter any hiccups, such as a network connection error or an activation issue, please visit our Help Centre or contact our Support Team for assistance. We're here to help you get the most out of your eSIM experience.

Deleting vs Turning Off Your eSIM
Deciding whether to turn off your eSIM or delete it hinges on whether you plan to use it again. Once deleted, an eSIM can't be retrieved—you'll need to install a new one if you change your mind.
At eDataSIM, we recommend deleting your eSIM only if:
  • The eSIM doesn't support top-ups and can't be reloaded.
  • You have no plans to revisit the eSIM's destination.
If you'll use the eSIM again (perhaps you frequently travel to that destination), consider deactivating it. This temporarily turns off the eSIM, allowing you to reactivate it next time you travel.
To deactivate an eSIM plan:
  1. Go to your device Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile.
  3. You'll see an option to Turn On/Off This Line—switch it off.
When you return to the destination, follow the same steps to turn your eSIM back on. Remember, if the eSIM's validity period has expired, you'll need to top up your plan to reconnect.
